Dean S. Keeble is a senior support scientist on the XPDF beamline at Diamond Light Source, UK. He gained his MPhys degree from the University of Warwick in 2005 and continued in the physics department there to complete his PhD studies of ferroelectricity in layered perovskites, with a particular focus on crystallography.  In order to continue his post-doctoral studies he then attained a Science City Research Fellowship and began to use more complex crystallographic techniques to study disorder in functional materials, most notably using pair distribution function (PDF) studies. This technique reveals disorder in polycrystalline materials and allows this disorder to be characterised and modelled, and its effect on physical properties to be understood. This work led him—via a post-doctoral position at Diamond—to his current role on XPDF helping to design, build, and integrate software and hardware on this new dedicated x-ray PDF beamline, which will be coming online in 2016. He is the author or co-author of 20 peer-reviewed research papers, and continues to research structural disorder in functional materials and in particular in ferroelectrics and piezoelectrics.
