Ethan J. Crumlin

Ethan J. Crumlin is a Career Staff Scientist at the Advanced Light Source (ALS, a 3rd generation synchrotron facility) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in Berkeley California. He received his B.S. (2005), M.S. (2007), and Ph.D. (2012) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, advised by Prof. Yang Shao-Horn conducting fundamental studies of heterostructured oxide thin film electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction at high temperatures. Afterward, he became a Postdoctoral Fellow (advised by Prof. Zhi Liu), and shortly afterward a research scientist (2014), and in the Fall of 2017, he was promoted to a Career Staff Scientist LBNL. He was awarded the JCESR Directors Fund award in 2014, and have since continued as PI while becoming an affiliate for JCAP since 2015. His work was published in 91 peer-reviewed articles (h-index 25; >2000 citations) and five patents.

In 2015, the International Solid State Ionics awarded him the Young Scientist Award for his contributions to the field using APXPS. The ALS is a research user facility, and Ethan helps users from all around the world to conduct leading X-ray science to answer challenging scientific questions, including this collaboration with Prof. Yildiz. In addition to working with scientific users, he leads a research group to use ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) to study chemical and electrochemical reactions at the solid-gas, solid-liquid, and solid-solid interfaces for fuel cell, catalysts, battery, and other electrochemical systems.
