Kobayashi_K_125Kiyoshi Kobayashi is the principal researcher at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Tsukuba, Japan. He received his PhD in materials science and engineering from Nagoya Institute of Technology in 1998. During his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral courses at NIT, his supervisor was Professor Shu Yamaguchi, now a professor at the University of Tokyo. After receiving his PhD degree, Dr. Kobayashi moved to the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Tsukuba, Japan. He worked there as a researcher until March 2006. His research themes at AIST were the developments of oxide materials for thermoelectric conversion and oxygen permeable composites.

In April 2006, Kobayashi moved from AIST to NIMS, where he started to research new solid electrolytes, and oxyapatite oxide ion conductors. He succeeded in developing new low-temperature synthesis processes of lanthanum silicate oxyapatite, analysis on the phase diagram in LaO1.5-SiO2-MgO system, and more. He has more than 50 research papers and 4 patents.

In 1998, he published a paper about the quasi-ternary ZrO2-Y2O3-TiO2 phase diagrams, which was featured on one of covers of the ACerS-NIST Phase Equilibria Diagrams.

His additional interest is researching the electrochemical impedance composed of solid oxide ion conductor and metallic electrode systems, and he has published one paper on this topic. Of course, development on materials related to solid oxide fuel cells have been continued by combinations of material processing and electrochemical measurements.
