Robert Vaßen, is department head at Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, IEK-1, Jülich, Germany. He received in 1986 his Diploma in Physics and in 1990 his PhD both at the RWTH Aachen. In 2004 he finished his Habilitation at the Ruhr-University in Bochum on “Materials Synthesis and Processing”, in 2009 he was appointed as professor at the Ruhr University. He was a guest professor at the University West, Trollhättan, Sweden and refused a call on a W3 professorship at the TU Berlin.

Since 1990 he is a scientist at IEK-1. From 1998 on he is department head, since 2014 also the deputy head of IEK-1.

He has published more than 300 papers (H-index of 36) and holds more than 20 patents. He has given about 100 invited talks and serves as a reviewer for several journals and as evaluator for different societies. 2017 he was indroduced in the Hall of Fame of the Thermal Spray Society (ASM).

Since 1998 he is a member of The American Ceramic Society and supports the society actively e.g. as a co-organizer of conferences as the Coating Symposium at the annual “International Conference on Advanced Ceramics and Composites”. In addition, he is a frequent reviewer of The Journal of the American Ceramic Society and of The International Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology. He is also an active member of the German Ceramic Society.

His research focus is the development of different coatings for advanced power plants as thermal barrier coatings or abradables for gas turbines and environmental barrier coatings for ceramic matrix composites. Since many years he is also active in the coating development for solid oxide fuels cells, membranes for oxygen and hydrogen separation and more recently, repair technologies especially by cold spray, aerosol deposition and ceramic matrix composites.
