Xiaobing Ren, currently a Managing Researcher and Professor at National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS). He has been also associated with Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) under an MOU between NIMS and XJTU.

He received his BS (1986) and PhD (1994) in materials science from Xi’an Jiaotong University. During 1997-2000 he served as a junior faculty member at University of Tsukuba after working as a postdoc in Nanjing University (1994-96) and a JSPS fellow at University of Tsukuba (1996-97). He moved to NIMS in 2000 as a senior researcher and was later promoted to chief researcher, group leader, and managing researcher.

His research interest is centered in a wide range of ferroic materials, from ferroelectric/piezoelectric materials, shape memory alloys, to magnetostrictive materials. He has published more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and his papers have received more than 11000 citations, with two papers having received more than 1000 citations. His research has made an impact to both academia and industry, and he received Outstanding Young Researcher Award of Japan Institute of Metals and Materials (1998), and Tsukuba Outstanding Young Scientist Prize (2005), and Meritorious Award of Japan Institute of Metals and Materials (2011).
