° Turkish table-glass manufacturer Gürallar has placed an order with Horn Glass for an end-fired furnace. The 300tpd furnace with three forehearth lines for container glass production will be built for Gürallar’s new company, Gürallar Cam Ambalaj, based on a 300,000m2 site in Kütaya.

° In order to install an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) turbine at its Villotta, Italy plant, Owens-Illinois has chosen BDF Industries as the supplier for the heat recovery facility. The recovery of thermal energy via an ORC turbine allows efficient use of exhaust gases produced by the glass-melting furnace, with the aim of maximising energy recovery without affecting the glass production process. 

° Following price increases from Guardian (April 17) and PPG (April 24), in an April 28 letter to customers, Pilkington North America Inc. announced it would increase prices from 9 percent on its most popular items to 3 percent for some specialty products. These prices will be effective with all shipments as of June 2, 2014. 

° On May 3, a fire broke out at the Owens-Illinois glass plant in Waco, Tx. The fire started in the back of the building and workers were evacuated for a short time while crews put out the fire. The extent of the damage is not known at this time.

° Mediterranean Float Glass (MFG) of Algeria, one of the largest flat glass producers in Africa, now has a second project to develop the production line and a facility for doors and windows. The two projects together account for nearly 15 billion dinars investment, according to the company.

° Allied Mineral Products Europe B.V. of Tholen, Netherlands, has started an expansion on its manufacturing facility. The expansion calls for the addition of nearly 3000 sq meters to the existing facility. The development also will include a new space for Precast Shapes to be manufactured, which will provide additional products and value for Allied’s European customers.
