This is creative stop-action video was made by coordinating the opening and closing of dorm room shutters on a campus in Switzerland. It is fun to watch how much movement and action was created by a simple 11 by 10 array of shutters. (The building itself is a nondescript an 11-story concrete box.)
The video is the work of artist Guillaume Raymond and was part of a tenth anniversary celebration of the Haute Ecole de Santé Vaud in Lausanne, Switzerland (a health school).
It got me thinking about crystal structures (I’m a nerd, I know) and how some of the most useful and interesting properties of crystalline or polycrystalline materials have to do with motion of “something”—like an atom, electron, ion, hole, phonon, etc.—through a “rigid” crystal structure.
