4th International Directionally Solidified Eutectic Ceramics Workshop: DSEC IV

October 14-17, 2012

Washington, D.C.

Meeting Description:

The 4th International Workshop on Directionally Solidified Eutectic Ceramics (DSEC IV) will be held in Washington D.C., U.S.A., October 14-17, 2012. The inaugural workshop was held in Paris in 2003 and, for the first time, brought together the international community of ceramists studying directionally solidified eutectics to a common venue to exchange knowledge and share ideas. The remarkable success of the first workshop motivated the community to continue the gathering on a tri-annual basis, with subsequent workshops held in Kyoto in 2006 and Seville in 2009. Over these years, the field of eutectics research has broadened in scope to consider complex multicomponent oxide systems for a variety of structural and functional applications. In addition, there has been a resurgence of interest in boride and carbide eutectics for their high-hardness and refractory properties. DSEC IV will bring together the top scientists from Europe, Asia, North America and South America to discuss recent progress in phase diagram determination, solidification theory and modeling, novel processing strategies, microstructure investigation, and physical property analysis of eutectic ceramics.
