Advances in single crystal fibers and thin rods grown by laser heated pedestal growth

 

Single crystal fibers are an intermediate between laser crystals and doped glass fibers. They have the advantages of both guiding laser light and matching the efficiencies found in bulk crystals, which is making them ideal candidates for high-power laser and fiber laser applications. This work focuses on the growth of a flexible fiber with a core of dopant (Er, Nd, Yb, etc.) and a polycrystalline clad of YAG that will exhibit good wave guiding properties, and the growth and characterization of single crystal fiber rods. Direct growth or a combination of growth and cladding experiments are described. We will present the excellent results for amplification and lasing that were obtained in Yb:YAG thin rods. These results confirm the potential for single crystal fibers to overcome the limitations of the glass fibers commonly used in fiber lasers, making them prime candidates for high power compact fiber lasers and amplifiers.

Gisele Maxwell is the CEO and co-founder of Shasta Crystals Inc. She worked at Crystal Technology, Inc. in Palo Alto, California, first as process scientist, then as engineering manager for crystal growth. Then she worked as manager of lithium tantalate products at Silicon Light Machines (a wholly owned subsidiary of Cypress Semiconductors) in Sunnyvale, California, where she headed development of two businesses for surface acoustic wave devices. She has extensive expertise in crystal growth (Czochralski and LHPG), non-linear optical materials (including lithium niobate and lithium tantalate), project management, and customer relations. Maxwell holds a Ph.D in physics and materials science from the University of Lyon, France.
