If you are not currently an ACerS member, you may join by going to ACerS membership page and choosing the "Apply" link at the top of the page. During the application process, choose the NICE membership option.
EDUCATION
ACerS/NICE is the lead organization responsible for accreditation of collegiate programs in glass and ceramic engineering through the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). This includes working with TMS to evaluate materials science and engineering programs with specialties or emphasis in ceramics.
ACerS/NICE holds a seat on the ABET Board of Directors and has representatives on the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC).

LICENSING
The American Ceramic Society’s National Institute of Ceramic Engineers (ACerS/NICE) writes and administers the Professional Engineering examination in ceramic engineering. The exam is offered through the Ohio State Board of Registration.
ACerS/NICE participates in the National Council for Examiners in Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) as a member of NCEES’ Participating Organizations Liaison Council (POLC).

The Friedberg Memorial Lecturer
This NICE lecture honors the memory of Arthur L. Friedberg, a Professor at the University of Illinois from 1963 to 1979 and the Executive Director of the American Ceramic Society from 1979 to 1984. The person selected to present the Arthur L. Friedberg Memorial Lecture should be someone who has made some outstanding contributions to ceramic engineering. Ideally, those contributions would have a technological basis that relates to the processing or manufacturing of ceramic products instead of to the scientific theory on which ceramic engineering is based. This awardee must be a member of both NICE and ACerS.
Nominations must be in written form consisting of a paragraph of about 150 words. The nomination may be part of a single-page letter. Nominations will remain active for five years.
Greaves-Walker Award
The Arthur Frederick Greaves-Walker Award honors a founding member and first president of NICE. It is presented to an individual who has rendered outstanding service to the ceramic engineering profession and who, by their life and career, has exemplified the aims, ideals and purposed of NICE. This awardee must be over 41 years of age and hold their Professional Engineering license or be able to provide documentation has having worked primarily in the area of engineering throughout their career and be a member of NICE.
Nominations must be in written form consisting of a description of the nominee's professional credentials, summary of service to NICE and the ceramic engineering profession. Nominations can be accompanied by letters of recommendation by other professionals who can testify to the appropriateness of the nomination.
Schwartzwalder-PACE Award
The Karl Schwartzwalder Professional Achievement in Ceramic Engineering Award is presented jointly by the NICE and ACerS. It honors a past president and distinguished life member of the Society. It recognizes the nation's outstanding young ceramic engineer whose achievements have been significant to the profession and the general welfare of the American people. This awardee must be over the age of 21 but not yet reached their 41st birthday, a member of NICE and of the Society.
Nominations must be submitted on a specific form which may be obtained from the American Ceramic Society or NICE. The nomination will remain active for three years.
