Dr. Edward N. Boulos - A Profile In Excellence
![]() The ACerS Glass and Optical Materials Division recognizes Dr. Edward N. Boulos for excellence in ceramic science and engineering. Since 2005, he has provided consulting services in glass science and engineering, as an expert in float glass manufacturing, fabrication and applications. He heads Boulos Consulting in Troy, Michigan. From 1984 to 2005, Dr. Boulos was a Senior Corporate Fellow and Team Leader in Glass Davison’s, Ford Motor / Visteon Corps. From 1980-1984 he worked for Anchor Hocking Corp. as a Senior Scientist in the area of ovenware glass tempering, and from 1972-1980 he worked as a research scientist at Catholic Univ. of America, Washington D.C. and the American University in Cairo, Egypt. He received the NICE Friedberg Award in 2006, and the Toledo Glass and Ceramic Award in 2005. He served as the Chair of the Glass and Optical Materials Division from 1996 to 1998, and as Program Chair for the first ACerS PAC RIM meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii (1991-1993). Boulos represented ACerS at the International Commission on Glass as a Counsel member and Coordinating Technical Committee member from 1995 to 2007. He has organized many technical symposia and chaired numerous technical sessions at ACerS and other technical meetings. In addition, he has presented numerous technical papers at national and international meetings, including several invited talks. Accomplishments in Ceramic Science and Engineering: As a leading expert in the areas of glass melting and glass composition at Ford / Visteon Glass Divisions, Dr. Boulos developed many new float glass products and introduced them to the market during his 23 years of employment there. All solar efficient glasses presently used on Ford cars, vans and truck are based on patented compositions that were co-invented and developed during that time. Many unique colored architectural float glasses were also developed and launched. These contributions resulted in more than 30 US patents and Boulos received “The Henry Ford Technological Award”, the highest technical award offered by Ford Motor Co., in 1989, 1993 and 1999. At Anchor Hocking Co. a new line of tempered soda lime ovenware was successfully introduced to the market. This project involved the development of new forming and tempering techniques for complex shaped glass products. Dr. Boulos’ other accomplishments include 35 published technical papers and two co-edited books. He also served on the Liaison Board of CGR from 1988-2002 and was its President in 1992. Also served on the Executive Board of GMIC (1999-2005) and was its president in 2003. Why do you belong to ACerS? “Joining ACerS as a graduate student has to be one of the best decisions that I have made. Being an active member of the society has helped me all the way through my career. Joining the Society’s activities as a ceramic engineering student, I benefited from the feedback I received when presenting my research data at meetings. Most of my contacts were made through people in my field that I met at ACerS meetings. Getting involved with the Glass Division’s committees and holding positions such as a Program Chair then Division Chair then becoming a Fellow of the Society have influenced and advanced my career tremendously.” |
