Dr. Louis J. Trostel Jr. - A Profile in Excellence
![]() ![]() Dr. Dr. Louis J. Trostel Jr. - A Profile In Excellence ACerS congratulates Dr. Louis J.
Trostel Jr. for his excellence in ceramic science and engineering. Dr. Trostel has been an independent technical
consultant for a number of years, specializing in advanced ceramics and
refractories. He was Research Manager for 10 years in the Norton Company
Advanced Ceramics Group before his retirement and the establishment of his
technical consulting practice. He has
been a member of ACerS since 1949, and was elected a Fellow of the Society in
1969. He directed the Norton
commercial refractory research and development department concerned with
monolithic refractories, silicon carbide refractories, high purity oxide
refractories and associated ceramic products. He was Research Associate for 10
years and Senior Research Engineer for 15 years at Norton in the Industrial
Ceramics and Refractory Divisions before becoming Research Manager. Prior to
Norton, he was at The Ohio State Research Foundation from 1950 to 1955. Dr. Trostel is the author
and co-author of over 27 technical papers on refractories, their properties and
testing. He contributed the "Refractories" chapter to
"Industrial Minerals and Rocks - Sixth Edition" published by SME; the
"Ceramics" chapter to the McGraw-Hill "Chemical and Process
Technology Encyclopedia" and the "Literature of Refractories"
chapter to "Literature of Chemical Technology" published by the
American Chemical Society. He was editor of the "Proceedings of the First
Unified International Technical Conference on Refractories (UNITECR '89)"
as well as Program Chairman. He was the Senior US International Executive Board
member for the UNITECR’97 Congress hosted by the He has been awarded 3 He received his B. Ceramic
Engineering, M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Ceramic Engineering, all from The Ohio State
University. He is a member (since 1949)
and Fellow of the American Ceramic Society serving as Chairman of its
Refractories Ceramics Division from 1985 to 1986. He served as Trustee of that
Division on the ACerS Board from 1993 to 2002 and continues as the division’s Councilor.
In addition he has been active on the ACerS Publication and Nomenclature
Committees. He was awarded the T. L.
Planje Refractories Award by the St. Louis Section of ACerS in 1996. Dr. Trostel has been a
member of the New England Section of The American Ceramic Society since 1955,
serving in the Section’s offices including Chairman and receiving the F. H.
Norton Award of Distinguished New England Ceramist in 1982. He is currently
serving as Section Councilor. He is also a Fellow of ASTM
and has been a member of its Committee C8 on Refractories and its subcommittees
for many years. He was Secretary for Committee C8 twice, the first time from
1968 to 1975, and served as chairman of the committee from 1994 to 2000. As a
member since 1985 and Chairman (1988-1994) of its International Standards
Subcommittee, he is active on the U.S. Technical Advisory Group of the
International Standards Organization, Technical Committee on Refractories
(ISO/TC33). On ISO/TC33, he is serving as Convener of one of its Working
Groups. Dr. Trostel was on the
Refractories Institute's Technical Advisory Committee for 11 years and served
as Chairman for four years until the end of 1989. He is a member of Sigma Xi,
Tau Beta Pi, The National Institute of Ceramic Engineers (NICE), Keramos and is
a Registered Engineer in the State of |
