Bomas Machine Specialties celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. Started in 1959 to service the niche industry of ceramic machining, Bomas continues to provide advanced ceramics machining for wear applications in all types of environments.
A summer school entirely devoted to photonic materials
From June 16–21, the Centre for Optics, Photonics and Lasers at Université Laval, in Quebec City, Canada, hosted the first North American Summer School on Photonic Materials. The School, organized by the International Commission on Glass, had 80 participants from 13 different countries.
Qatar- Qeeri, Japanese institute sign pact for research collaboration
Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (Qeeri) and the International Centre for Materials Nanoarchitectonics in Japan signed an MOU to strengthen and promote scientific cooperation and research collaboration. The agreement enables Qeeri researchers to conduct joint research on development of various nanoelectronic devices.
GKN Aerospace opens world’s largest additive manufacturing pilot production cell
GKN Aerospace commissioned a second additive manufacturing cell (Cell 2) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Cell 2 is the world’s largest pilot production cell of its kind and is the next stage in GKN Aerospace’s additive manufacturing research and development targeting large scale structural aircraft components.
Collins Aerospace to establish aerospace innovation hub in Singapore
Collins Aerospace Systems announced a strategic investment in Singapore to develop a 15,000 square ft. aerospace innovation hub dedicated to advanced maintenance, repair, overhaul processes and operations, and additive manufacturing processes and capabilities. It is Collins Aerospace’s fourth additive manufacturing lab and first center outside U.S.
Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre signs sixth Tier 1 partner
Gerdau, a Brazilian steel company, is the sixth company to sign a Tier 1 partnership with Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre. The collaboration will focus on anti-corrosion coatings, composites for the automotive industry, membranes, and energy storage devices.
Heinz-Glas unveils €30 million Polish furnace
Heinz-Glas unveiled a new 150 tonnes per day furnace at its Działdowo, Poland facility. The German glassmaker overhauled its opal glass and built a new one that manufactures flint glass. It is the largest in the group’s history and has eight production lines.
Encirc invests in world’s first intelligent glass line and increased capacity
U.K. glass container manufacturer and bottler, Encirc, is set to boost glass production capacity at its site in Elton, Cheshire by building a world-first ‘Industry 4.0-Ready’ glass production line. The new line will see the plant’s hot end (where bottles are produced) digitally connected to the cold end (where bottles are inspected).
Romania seeks battery-plant investment through its rare earths
Romania is reopening three mines that produce rare metals, including europium and dysprosium, for the first time in three decades in order to lure investments in battery plants for electric cars. Talks with battery manufacturers are ongoing for an investment of more than 50 million euros (US$57 million).

Australia begins first-ever trial to create roads through industrial waste
The City of Sydney launched a trial to construct roads using industrial waste from coal-fired power stations and steel manufacturing, an initiative that can lower the pollution and greenhouse gases emitted during the production of concrete for laying roads.
Corning is building more Gen 10.5 glass plants, just not in Wisconsin
Corning Inc. will build two Gen 10.5 glass plants in China with at least three-quarters of the investment in each coming from customers or other stakeholders. Gen 10.5 plants produce glass optimized for 65- and 75-inch display screens and need to be co-located with screen fabrication facilities because of the size of the glass.

Schott invests in its glass tubing manufacturing plant in India
German technology group Schott invested an additional double-digit million-Euro figure into a new glass tank at its tubing manufacturing plant in Jambusar, India. The expansion follows recent investments at the site, including the construction of an additional tank facility last year.
