GE to invest billions in Africa’s people, infrastructure, manufacturing

GE announced that it would invest more than $2 billion in Africa in new plants, skills training, and sustainability projects. The new commitment will include a $250-million multi-modal manufacturing plant in Nigeria that will create 2,300 local jobs, a power generation project in Ghana and a training center in South Africa.

PPG awards more than $340,000 through National Merit Scholarship program

The PPG Industries Foundation is sponsoring more than $340,000 worth of undergraduate college scholarships for U.S. students in communities where PPG Industries operates. The program, through the National Merit Scholarship Corp., will include 54 new four-year scholarships, according to a recent company release.

University of Manchester partners with Morgan Advanced Materials for graphene development

Morgan Advanced Materials has announced a new joint development agreement with The University of Manchester, aimed at scaling up a new process for manufacturing graphene. The partnership has been established to improve the prospects of bringing this material to commercial reality.


Saint-Gobain shuts down Devens plant

Saint-Gobain has ceased operations at the former Evergreen Solar plant in Devens, Mass. The company told the Worcester Business Journal that it ended its production of components used in LED lights sometime during the spring. A statement provided to the Journal cited “changes in the market” for its decision. 

Cambridge Nanotherm appoints new CEO

Cambridge Nanotherm, a producer of innovative semiconductor heatsink technologies, announced that it has appointed semiconductor industry veteran Ralph Weir as its CEO. The company also recently initiated its first production line, allowing the company to roll out its advanced nano-ceramic heat dissipation technology at high volumes to meet the growing needs of LED makers.

Window companies utilize 3D printing technology

While 3D printing has been around since the 1980s, the process has been getting more common in recent years, particularly in the architectural industry. Some window companies, including Crystal Window and Door Systems, are using this technology to their advantage for product design and development efforts.

PPG debuts redesigned, updated GlassNET site for glass ordering, tracking

PPG Industries’ flat glass business has launched GlassNET, a fully redesigned and updated version of its online order entry, inventory review, and shipment tracking system. The GlassNET site now features an easier-to-use and more colorful customer interface as well as expanded functionality for glass ordering, inventory search and shipment tracking.
