Corning Gorilla Glass for automotive receives BMW award

Corning Incorporated received the BMW Supplier Innovation Award in the lightweight construction category for the development of its thin, optically clear Gorilla Glass for automotive product. Gorilla Glass is used in the BMW i8 as an acoustic glass partition to shield sound from the rear engine. 

US government order totals 114,000 enhanced combat helmets from 3M

3M announced it has received additional orders from U.S. government for its Enhanced Combat Helmet that provide military personnel with protection against head injury from ballistic threats and blunt impacts. The new orders bring the total contract value for Enhanced Combat Helmets and associated spare parts to $107 million.

Guardian spends $95M to upgrade glass production

Guardian Industries Corp, the world’s largest manufacturer of float glass and fabricated glass products, has earmarked a budget of $95 million for 2015–2016 to overhaul and upgrade its production in Thailand. The company plans to spend $45 million next year and $50 million in 2016.

Cree earns US DoD manufacturing readiness level 8 designation

Cree Inc. has earned the U.S. Department of Defense manufacturing readiness level eight designation. Awarded for its production of GaN monolithic microwave integrated circuits, this designation verifies Cree’s ability to provide  production capabilities and capacities for items essential to national defense.

Panasonic Corporation has established a new manufacturing company of lithium-ion batteries, Panasonic Energy Corporation of North America. The company will be built in the Tesla Gigafactory, a large-scale battery manufacturing plant in Sparks, Nev.
