Alcoa buying Tital to help expand aerospace unit

Alcoa is buying titanium and aluminum structural castings company Tital to help expand its global aerospace business. Financial terms were not disclosed. Alcoa says that the transaction will help it deal with rising demand for advanced jet engine components made of titanium, which can withstand extreme high heat and pressure.

MC Industrial to construct Boeing composite facility expansion

St. Louis-based MC Industrial Inc. has been chosen to construct Boeing’s new 367,000-square-foot composite center on its St. Louis campus. Preliminary design is underway, with construction starting in the winter 2015 and final completion scheduled for June 2016. The new multi-million dollar manufacturing facility, an expansion of Boeing’s St. Louis tooling center, will produce parts for the 777X aircraft.

Corning to acquire TR Manufacturing

Corning Inc. has reached an agreement to acquire TR Manufacturing Inc. (Fremont, Calif.). The terms of the agreement were not released. TR Manufacturing is a provider of fiber-optic and copper cable/component interconnects and electro-mechanical assemblies to OEMs in a wide range of industries.

Global flat glass demand to increase 8.6% annually through 2018

Global demand for flat glass is forecast to advance 8.6% per year to 11.5 billion square meters in 2018, valued at $112 billion, according to Freedonia’s World Flat Glass Market report. The largest improvements are expected in developed countries, as rebounds in building construction activity in these regions of Europe and North America will support rising demand for architectural flat glass.

Sika versus Saint-Gobain in takeover deal

Sika AG, a Swiss maker of construction chemicals and adhesives that’s resisting a sale of a controlling stake to Saint-Gobain SA, said it’s open to talks that would address “obvious flaws” of the $2.8 billion transaction. Citing conflicts of interests and the lack of upside for minority shareholders, Sika’s management has threatened to quit after Saint-Gobain agreed to buy a 16.1 percent stake.

Futura Ceramics invests $2M in new kiln

Futura Ceramics, producers of ceramic glaze frit and ceramic rollers, has invested $2 million in a brand new kiln from Germany to further increase quality and also production. These newly high-temperature-fired rollers are suitable for all types of roller hearth kilns.

PPG Industries to provide Gulfstream windows, assemblies

PPG Industries’ aerospace transparencies group has been selected by Gulfstream to supply windshields, side cockpit windows, and passenger-cabin window assemblies for the G500 and G600 business jets that will provide superior performance for operators and maximum efficiencies for Gulfstream. The passenger-cabin windows will use OPTICOR advanced transparency material to maintain optical clarity and provide a quieter cabin.
