NIST announces 2016 plans for manufacturing center competitions

The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership has announced that it will hold two separate competitions in 2016 for MEP centers in 21 states and Puerto Rico. The upcoming competitions are part of a multi-year effort to make the most of MEP’s federal investment in U.S. manufacturing and to allocate additional funds to areas with higher concentrations of manufacturers.

Global market for thermal management products is expected to reach $15.56B by 2018

According to a recently published report from iRAP Inc., “Electronic Thermal Management—Technology, Materials, Devices, New Developments, Industry Structure and Global Markets,” the world market for thermal management products is predicted to grow from about $8.8 billion in 2013 to $15.56 billion by 2018, at an average annual growth rate of 12.1%.

Gyrotron Technology enters into agreement with PPG Industries

Gyrotron Technology Inc., has entered into a sub-award and development agreement with PPG Industries Inc. GYTI will assist PPG as a subcontractor in a project majority funded by the Department of Energy, which calls for PPG to demonstrate components of a fabricate-on-demand vacuum insulating glazing manufacturing process. GYTI was retained by PPG to provide expertise relating to microwave heating techniques as applied to glass joining processes.

O-I to acquire Vitro’s food and beverage business for $2.15B

Owens-Illinois Inc. has reached a definitive agreement with Vitro S.A.B. de C.V. to acquire Vitro’s food and beverage glass container business in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $2.15 billion. Vitro is the largest supplier of glass containers in Mexico. The transaction, which has been approved by the boards of directors of both companies, is subject to approval by Vitro’s shareholders and customary regulatory approvals. The deal is expected to close within 12 months.

Chip companies are in the spotlight today: Apple supplier Skyworks has released a new line of analog control chips appropriate for IoT applications, and Avago Technologies and Qorvo introduced new fiber optic products and power amplifiers, respectively.
