Bayer MaterialScience renamed Covestro

Bayer has announced that the new name of its MaterialScience business will be Covestro, effective September 1, 2015. Bayer intends to float Covestro on the stock market by mid-2016 at the latest. The name Covestro is made from a combination of words that reflect the identity of the new company. The letters C and O come from collaboration, while VEST signifies the company is well invested in state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities. The final letters, STRO, show the company is strong.

Schott sets glass tubing record with outer diameter of 460 mm

Schott has made history by creating the world’s largest industrially manufactured glass tube. The record-size tube, made of Duran glass, has an outer diameter of 460 mm—40 mm wider than the previous record-setting tube—and measures more than 1.5 m long with a wall thickness of 8.5 mm. Developed with a specialty manufacturing process, the tube represents a range of new application possibilities.

Peter Coulson-Smith joins IPS Ceramics

The IPS Ceramics sales team has added Peter Coulson-Smith as Sales & Business Development Manager. Peter comes to the company with over 30 years’ experience selling refractories and technical ceramics into a wide range of industries and for extremely diverse applications. His most recent position was as sales manager at Thermal Ceramics, before which he had sales roles with Vesuvius/RHI, Dyson Precision Ceramics and Morgan Refractories.

Sergio Galindo named president of O-I North America and Tim Connors named president of O-I Asia Pacific

Owens-Illinois Inc. announced that Sergio Galindo has been named president of O-I North America and Tim Connors has been named president of O-I Asia Pacific, effective June 1, 2015. Galindo, currently president of O-I’s Asia Pacific region, brings 20 years of experience to his new role and will be responsible for O-I operations in U.S. and Canada. Connors currently serves as general manager of O-I’s Australian operations, which drive the largest portion of O-I’s business in the region.

Goodfellow adds alumina crucibles in a wide range of sizes and tolerances

Goodfellow Ceramic and Glass Division offers alumina crucibles in sizes ranging from 0.03 ml to multi-liter capacity and with tolerances to suit specific customer applications. In addition to standard shapes, the company can supply crucibles made to customer drawings. Depending on the size, tolerance, and number of pieces required, alumina crucibles can be made by pressing, slip casting, or injection molding.
