A reception was held on Monday, Oct. 8, during MS&T’12, at a local restaurant to recognize the 2012 Bill Bates Awardee. The 2012 Bill Bates Award was presented to Eric Young, who joined ACerS in 1979 and has been a Pittsburgh Section member since 1981.

The award is named in honor of Bill Bates who passed away recently on August 13, 2012. Bates was a very active member and great counselor of the Pittsburgh Section. The award recognizes individuals who furthered the efforts of the Pittsburgh Section of The American Ceramic Society as well as the local ceramic community. It is given to a person that has years of service and participation to the Pittsburgh Section and the field of ceramics and has shown excellence in service to the Pittsburgh Section.

Previous Bill Bates awardees include Clem Larkin, Richard Hommel, Bob Oxnard, Bill Spangenberg, Chuck Marvin and Curt Zimmer.
