Emerging and Evolving Technologies that will Impact Manufacturing and their Economic Predictions
Jon Riley
Senior Vice President of Technology, National Center for Manufacturing Sciences

The past decade has seen significant changes in tax, trade, labor and regulatory policies coupled with accelerated research and innovation in energy, transportation, and information technologies. These pose significant challenges and opportunities for manufacturers of all sizes. For many manufacturers the question is not what to do, but how to do it. How can manufacturers minimize risk, cost, and time as they work to keep pace in an accelerating innovation adoption environment?

In this session Riley outlines the opportunities facing American Manufacturing organizations in driving radical change through collaborative technology partnerships.  NCMS – the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences – is the nation’s largest cross industry technology development organization, dedicated to improving the competitiveness and strength of the U.S. industrial base with over $1.2 billion in project funding. They believe that innovation occurs at the intersection of talent, investment and infrastructure.

Using real life case studies,  Riley shares his vision of how technology can enable change, and support dynamic growth. He will detail actual examples of companies he has worked with, the drivers of project collaboration, and the technologies deployed to drive radical change resulting in innovation and operational excellence.

Case Study—Digital Transformation in the Ceramics Industry: Using Simulation to Optimize Sintering Processes
Marc-Antoine Thermitus
Senior Application Scientist, NETZSCH Instruments North America

High quality and high mechanical strength of ceramic parts are often influenced by the following factors:

  • Contamination-free processing of the raw materials
  • Adequate binder burn-out
  • Sintering shrinkage characteristics
  • Thermal conductivity determination

High mechanical strength of technical ceramics can only be achieved with finest structures, without impurities nor defects. Non-destructive hot-modulus is a new possibility to study the mechanical high-temperature behavior of finished parts.

However, the ability to design the firing process for ceramic components or new materials quickly and efficiently is a challenge for the process engineer. It is common practice to optimize the process through lengthy and costly experimental firing programs. With the help of thermokinetic simulations, it is possible for the process engineer to simulate BEFORE firing. KINETICS NEO makes thermokinetic simulation tangible for daily use in the industry for the first time.

The Profit Equation: Five Key Numbers to Better Manage Your Business
Daniel J. Gisser
Business Advisor, AdviCoach

Gisser will facilitate a discussion of The Five Key Numbers leaders need to manage for their small and medium-sized businesses. These numbers are Lead Generation, Conversion Rate, Revenue/Customer, Gross Margin, and Fixed Costs. Put them all together into The Profit Equation and discover how small improvements in the five key numbers can make a big difference in your bottom line. We will discuss various strategies that our peers in ACerS have used to improve each of the five key numbers and consider which of those practices you can adopt. You will leave the seminar excited to get back to your business and look at your Five Key Numbers and the profit potential within.
