Dr. Nicholas Smith is a Senior Research Associate in the Thin Films and Surfaces Research directorate within Corning Incorporated, bringing interdisciplinary expertise in the fields of glass surface science, chemical durability, electric-field effects in glass, and surface characterization. Since joining Corning in 2011, research responsibilities have included innovations in glass surface technology for Corning Glass Technologies businesses, as well as advances in cover glass, thin glass, and advanced glass wafer products. 

Nick has also led projects working closely with global manufacturing facilities and customers of Corning Display Technologies and Precision Glass Solutions, as well as fundamental studies of glass corrosion and early-stage exploratory research on novel methods to modify glass surfaces. He holds a Ph.D. (’11) and a B.S. (’02) in Material Science & Engineering from Penn State University, and has authored or co-authored 50 peer-reviewed scientific publications, >200 technical reports, and is an inventor on 18 patent applications, 13 granted patents, and 5 trade secrets.
