Corning scientists developed industry’s first two AutoGrade cover glass solutions for auto interiors, in 2D and 3D formats. While the 2D cover glass is primarily suited to flat applications, the 3D glass is more suitable for shaped or curved applications.
Alfred University School of Engineering has nation’s most-advanced ceramic 3D printer
Alfred University’s Inamori School of Engineering is first U.S. university to install a 3D printer capable of printing high-resolution ceramic materials. The unit, a Lithoz CeraFab 8500, will be used for research and education, as well as by industrial partners.

First battery-free Bluetooth sticker sensor tag demonstrated at NRF
Wiliot, a semiconductor company, demonstrated the first-ever sticker-sized Bluetooth sensor tag incorporating an ARM processor, powered solely by scavenging energy from ambient radio frequencies. Amazon Web Services, Avery Dennison, and Samsung joined Wiliot’s original investor group for a $30M series B funding round.
Europe’s first industrial 3D concrete printing facility is located in Eindhoven
The first commercial, industrial 3D concrete printing facility in Europe was opened in Eindhoven. Saint-Gobain Weber Beamix and BAM Infra will experiment there with 3D printing of concrete elements for construction, starting with printing four bicycle bridges.
Kyocera to purchase major assets of US-based Renovis Surgical Technologies, Inc.
Renovis Surgical Technologies, Inc. finalized an agreement to sell major assets related to its artificial joint, trauma, and spinal product businesses to Kyocera International, Inc. The assets will be transferred into a new California-based company wholly owned by Kyocera.

Ten Corning facilities exceed energy efficiency goals
Corning Incorporated announced its global manufacturing plans reduced energy intensity by up to 52.4 percent, and that 10 of its global manufacturing facilities increased energy efficiency by more than 10 percent in five years or less, exceeding energy efficiency goals set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry.
Aggregate producer to use more post-consumer glass
AeroAggregates, a company that uses recovered glass to create construction materials, will double capacity by adding a second kiln at its Pennsylvania aggregate manufacturing plant. With the addition, Aero will use roughly 32,000 tons of post-consumer glass per year.
MEPs back spending €6bn on fusion energy research
The European Parliament voted to back Europe’s planned continued involvement in an international research programme on fusion power. The resolution backing the plan will invest €6.1bn (US$6.9bn) in fusion research in 2021-2027.
IIT Madras ties up with Italian company for sustainable energy research
Indian Institute of Technology Madras entered into a research collaboration on sustainable energy with Italian company Sotacarbo – Società Tecnologie Avanzate Carbone SpA. Their researchers will take up three main projects: biomass gasification, catalysts for CO2-to-methanol and syngas-to-methanol, and combustion and oxy-combustion.
US Energy Department to develop lithium recycling research center
The United States Energy Department is launching a research center on lithium battery recycling in order to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign sources. The department is also launching a prize for lithium battery recycling, with awards of $5.5 million.

Ireland offers €4m for innovative energy research
Businesses, universities, and public sector bodies in Ireland are invited to bid for a share of up to €4 million (US$4.5m) for innovative energy research projects. The level of funding available ranges from €100,000 (US$113,708) for projects of less than one year to €650,000 (US$739,103) for projects of up to four years.
