GT Advanced Technologies and seven subsidiaries filed for bankruptcy protection. Under the chapter 11 filing, the company will be allowed to restructure, and GT says that it will continue business as usual while developing a reorganization plan. GT’s surprise bankruptcy filing follows on news that Apple will not use its sapphire screens for the iPhone 6.

Alcoa opens world’s largest aluminum-lithium aerospace plant

Alcoa is officially opening the world’s largest aluminum-lithium plant in Lafayette, Ind. where it produces advanced, third-generation aluminum-lithium alloys for the aerospace industry. Aircraft manufacturers are increasingly turning to lighter and stronger aluminum-lithium alloys, which are less expensive than titanium and composites and enable better fuel efficiency and lower maintenance costs.

PPG announces expanded direct draw roving portfolio at CAMX 2014

PPG Industries’ fiber glass business has expanded the HYBON direct draw roving portfolio with a product providing a combination of processing and performance properties. O-I agrees to enter joint venture and long-term supply agreement with Constellation Brands

Owens-Illinois, Inc. has agreed to enter into a 50-50 joint venture with Constellation Brands Inc. The joint venture will operate the glass container production plant in Nava, Mexico, that Constellation recently agreed to purchase from Anheuser-Busch Inbev. The plant will provide bottles exclusively for Constellation’s adjacent brewery.
