Carbo Ceramics idles another proppant plant
Oil field services firm Carbo Ceramics closed another proppant plant as demand for its products dries up amid waning oil field activity. The Houston-based company said it will idle the plant in Millen, Georgia until the market rebounds. The company declined to say how many employees will be affected by the decision. This is the third proppant manufacturing facility closed by Carbo Ceramics in the past year.
Eurekite closes on over €1M investment from Cottonwood Euro Technology Fund
Eurekite, the first worldwide provider of a new nanotechnology based flexible ceramics, announced today that Cottonwood Euro Technology Funds has closed on founding capital to begin operations in Enschede, The Netherlands. The technology has numerous benefits over current ceramics, in particular that it behaves like paper and can be shaped into any position, and that it is not brittle.
Hans Joachim Konz, executive board member of Schott AG, is the new president of glasstec 2016. Konz graduated in mechanical engineering at Aachen University and started his career at MAHO AG. After working for mechanical engineering and construction company KHS Maschinenbau und Anlagenbau AG, he joined Schott.
Dow Corning to present advances in large-area 4H SiC epitaxial wafer quality and layer growth
Dow Corning experts in silicon carbide semiconductor technology will be among the presenters at the 16th International Conference on Silicon Carbide and Related Materials, Oct. 4–9. The technical conference, which explores electronics device technology based on silicon carbide and related materials, brings together technologists from around the world to discuss recent advances in crystal growth and characterization, control of material properties, and other basic research issues.

Tholen has been named the Institute’s new Managing Director of Engineering and Professional Development, Claire A. Hiltz has been named Manager of Professional Development, and Matthew R. Senecal has been named as Manager, Engineering.
Air Products receives PED certification for biogas membrane separators
Air Products’ PRISM Membranes division in St. Louis, Mo., has received Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) certification from DNV GL Business Assurance Italia S.r.l. for its newest line of biogas membrane separators. The biogas separators contain polymeric hollow fibers that use selective permeation to separate biogas into two enriched streams of biomethane and carbon dioxide.
Superior salt spray resistance for hermetic glass-to-metal sealed housings
Schott has now developed a special coating through which the industry’s salt spray requirements for hybrid housings can be exceeded. The coating protects glass-to-metal seals against corrosion—even after 24 hour salt spray tests. This improves the reliability of hermetic packages, especially for applications in extremely harsh environments, such as aerospace projects.
