The melting point of a solid is the temperature at which the solid transforms into a liquid, shedding its structural rigidity.

But is it possible to lose said structural rigidity without a change in temperature?

Mark Rober—the engineer and YouTube personality who previously showed us how to build a larger-than-life Super Soaker and unpacked the science of “skill” games—has filled his hot tub with sand to give us the answer.

With a little bit of air to reduce the friction between sand particles, something interesting happens. And, even on a smaller-than-hot-tub scale, it’s a great science project you can try yourself at home.
