Masahiro Yoshimura

Masahiro Yoshimura is a Distinguished Chair Professor (Guest) and Director of the Promotion Center for Global Materials Research, Materials Science and Engineering, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan and a Professor Emeritus at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan.


Yoshimura has received the following degrees:

B.S. in 1965, M.S. in 1967 and a D. Sc. in Engineering in 1970 from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan; 1970, Research Assoc., 1978 Assoc. Prof., 1985 Full Prof. in Materials and Structures Laboratory, Tokyo Institute of Technology.


During those periods, 1973-1975 he worked as a Post Doc in 3 CNRS Labs in France, (Odeillo, Orleans and Paris) and from 1975-1977 at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, MA, USA. He was the Director of The Center for Materials Design from 1996-2002.


After several visiting/guest professor positions at Tohoku University, Japan, University Limerick, Ireland, ETH Zurich, Switzerland, Institute of Metal Research, CAS, Shenyang, China, Yoshimura retired in 2008, as Professor Emeritus, from Tokyo Institute of Technology. He has been at the National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan since February 2010 as a Visiting Chair Professor, and in his present position since July 2012.


He was nominated by Thomson-Reuter as the ISI Highly-Cited Researcher in 2001. Yoshimura has >730 peer-reviewed papers, 84 reviews, 5 books (44 book chapters) and 30 patents, and >17,500 International Citations with h-index = 66 in Mendeley, Elsevier or Citations >22,000 for >850 articles in Research Gate.


He received the Academic Award (1993) from The Ceramic Society of Japan, 10th Fulrath Pacific Award (1987) and Fellow (1995) from The American Ceramic Society, International Award (2001) from The European Ceramic Society, IUMRS Somiya Award for International Collaborative Work, IUMRS (2002), Honorary Member in MRS – India (2003), Research Award, Ministry of Education, Culture & Science, Japan (2007), Lee Hsun Award, Institute of Metal Research, CAS, Shenyang, China (2008) and Honorable Permanent Resident Visa, Taiwan (2012). He received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 from ISHA. Yoshimura has been nominated as one of the Honorary Fellows in The European Ceramic Society in 2017.


Yoshimura has served as 19 Organizing Chairs, IUMRS-ICA, Chiba, 1997, IUMRS-ICAM, Yokohama, 2003, and International Conference in Hydrothermal Reactions, Sendai, 2006, 6th ISHA, 2016, Tainan, Taiwan, has joined 64 International Advisory/Organizing Committees, 21 Plenary Lectures, i.e. MS&T, San Francisco (2000), ICMAT, Singapore (2003), Hydrothermal/Solvothermal Symposia, Kochi, Japan (2000) Mysore, India (2004), Sendai, Japan (2006), Nottingham, UK (2008), Beijing, China (2010), etc. and gave >200 Invited/Keynote Lectures at International Meetings.


He is one of the Editors in Solid State Science (since 1988), J. Nanomaterials (since 2004), Nano Letters (2002-2005), etc. and Guest Editor in MRS Bull, Oct. 1994 and Sept. 2000, Euro. J. Solid State and Inorg. Chem. 1995, Solid State Ionics, 152/154, 2002, J. Mater. Sci. 2006 and 2007. Yoshimura is also the Founding President (2006-2008), of the International Solvothermal and Hydrothermal Association (ISHA).


He was the President of the Advisory Board (2010-2014) after the Chairman of the Nomination Committee, 2002, 2004 & 2006 in The World Academy of Ceramics (WAC), An Advisory Officer, IUMRS (Audit Elect 2007-2008, Former President of MRS-Japan).


Yoshimura has been an active participant in almost all of ACerS Meetings from 1975 – 2017 at Daytona Beach attending with present or former Graduate Students and/or Post-Docs. He is a Basic Science Division member.


He has been a keynote/invited speaker and served as session chairs and advisory members for Society meetings. In addition, he has organized/participated in related conferences such as:

CIMTEC, WAC, ICC, ECers, E-MRS, etc. and has visited many American, Asian and European universities and institutes.


His major research subjects are:


1) Phase Stability and Meta-Stability of Zirconia and Related Compounds.

2 Hydrothermal/Solvothermal Processing for Inorganic Materials, BaTiO3, Hap, Ferrite, etc.

3) Soft Processing (or Soft Solution Processing) for Ceramic Materials: Nano-Particles, Whiskers, Films, Patterns and Bulks.

4) Bio-Materials, Bio-Nanomaterials :Fabrication and Evaluation, etc.

5)Bio-Inspired Processing for Inorganic Materials for Sustainable Societies

6) Nano-Composites Ceramics via Melt/ Annealing of Eutectic Melts

7) Hydrothermal Carbons

8) Growing Integration Layer [GIL] Methods for Coating/Joining/Bonding of Ceramics on Metallic Materials

9) Synthesis and Phase/Valence Stability of Perovskite Phases.

10) How we can learn from Literature and academic common senses to exceed them.
