11 Divisions

ACerS membership divisions represent principal disciplines of traditional and advanced ceramics and glass, providing members with targeted professional communities, technical meetings, and resources. ACerS Art, Archaeology, and Conservation Science Division

ACerS AACS Division advances the scientific understanding of the materials found in ceramic art, and provides information that aids in the interpretation, reconstruction and preservation of traditional ceramic art and artifacts, as well as the techniques used in their creation.

ACerS BSD focuses on the basic properties of materials. Researchers concerned with the chemistry and physics of ceramic materials examine processing techniques, behavior, performance, and failure mechanisms.

ACerS Bioceramics Division is dedicated to stimulate the growth and activity of the Society, particularly in the areas of the science, engineering, and manufacturing of bioceramics, biocomposites, and biomaterials.

ACerS Cements Division is involved with the research, development, manufacturing and sale of cements, limes, and plasters.

The Electronics Division of The American Ceramic Society focuses on electronic materials and devices. Traditional areas of interest include dielectric and ferroelectric materials, high-k’ and tunable dielectrics for communications applications; ferroelectric and piezoelectric ceramics; ceramics for sensors, fuel cells, batteries, superconductors, and other renewable energy technologies; and recently, thermoelectric ceramics. In addition to the traditional areas, the division also explores emerging areas such as nanoscience, electronic composites, and new ceramic devices.

ACerS EDiv deals with capacitors, superconductors, varistors, electronic packages, sensors, semiconductors and other electronic devices. Applications include components for microcomputers, communication satellites, recording heads, microwaves, automotive control systems, lasers, and fuel cell.

ACerS Energy Materials and Systems Division aims to stimulate the growth and activities of the Society in the arts and sciences pertaining to ceramic and glass materials for energy-related applications.

ACerS ECD examines advanced ceramics such as coatings and structural ceramics that are of monolithic or composite composition. Members are concerned with the application of advanced ceramics in fields as diverse as automotive components, bioceramics, aerospace, armor, and commercial products.

The Glass & Optical Materials Division of The American Ceramic Society focuses on the scientific research and development, application and manufacture of all types of glass, including fiber optics, the encapsulation of nuclear and hazardous wastes in glasses and the interaction of glass and ceramics in biosystems. Members of this division work with glasses in the optical, aerospace, window and electronic industries among others.

ACerS GOMD focuses on the scientific research and development, application and manufacture of all types of glasses, including fiber optics, the encapsulation of nuclear and hazardous wastes in glasses and the interaction of glass and ceramics in biosystems.

ACerS Manufacturing Division (the former Whitewares & Materials Division) focuses on meeting the broader needs of today’s manufacturers who produce or use ceramic and glass materials, including the entire supply chain. In addition to enhancing networking opportunities, it addresses new manufacturing processes and techniques, sustainability, and business and environmental issues.

The Refractory Ceramics Division of The American Ceramic Society examines the science, production and application of ceramics for use at elevated temperatures and in other hostile environments. Members are involved in materials development, formulation, production, and engineering of refractories for the iron, steel, aluminum, and other nonferrous metal industries as well as the minerals processing, glass, cement, and petrochemical industries.

ACerS RCD examines the science, production and application of ceramics for use at elevated temperatures and in other hostile environments.
