The ACerS International Germany Chapter hosted a workshop on August 29, 2025, entitled “Learning from Failures: Unfiltered Academic Experiences and Insights” at the University of Cologne, Institute of Inorganic and Materials Chemistry. The event brought together students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty members for an open conversation on the realities of academic life. The workshop featured inspiring talks by Sanjay Mathur, Thomas Fischer, Hajar Homa Maleki, and Shaista Ilyas, who candidly shared their personal journeys, highlighting how they navigated failures, ethical challenges, and setbacks while also seizing opportunities for growth. Through interactive discussions, participants reflected on their own academic challenges, the importance of resilience, and the critical role of mentorship in shaping successful careers. A lively quiz activity added a fun and engaging dimension to the event, encouraging openness and active participation. Overall, the workshop reinforced the message that failures are an integral part of the academic pathway and underscored the value of shared experiences, community support, and mentorship in overcoming challenges and building opportunities for future success.
