The potential impact of bioactive, biomimetic, and bio-inspired materials on our quality of life is enormous. We are already reaping benefits from bioactive glass materials in dental health, for example. Furthermore, research to replicate the outstanding structure–property relationships of naturally occurring items will lead to dramatic improvements to processing, performance, and sustainability of ceramic, glass, and composite materials and components in a wide range of applications.

An upcoming special issue of Journal of the American Ceramic Society will explore the latest innovations, applications, challenges, and future directions of the next generation bioactive, biomimetic, and bio-inspired materials. We also welcome your insights into the past, present, and future of bioactive, biomimetic, and/or bio-inspired materials in the form of a review or perspective article.

Call for paper topics: Materials and processing, characterization studies, mechanical and functional properties, studies on computational modeling and design

Keywords: bioactive, biomimetic, bio-inspired, ceramics, glass, nature, healthcare, sustainability

Submission instructions and process: Please refer to the Author Guidelines to prepare your manuscript. When submitting your manuscript, please answer the question “Is this submission for a special issue?” by selecting the special issue title “Material design from nature” from the drop-down list.

Deadline for submissions: Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025.
