We are excited to share our division’s third quarterly newsletter for the second quarter of 2025. If you missed our previous letters, you can find them here:

In this letter, we would like to provide you with the updates about:
- The division’s success in the abstract collection for the EMSD-sponsored symposia at MS&T25.
- We have awarded several travel stipends to selected participants of PACRIM16 & GOMD2025.
- We have published call for abstracts together with the ACerS Spring Meeting for symposia sponsored and co-sponsored by EMSD.
- We have delivered a mid-term General Business Meeting to our division members.
- We are seeking nominations for the D. T. Rankin award.
During the second quarter of 2025, the division has developed in the following aspects:
1. Success in abstract collection at MS&T25, September 28–October 1, 2025, Columbus, Ohio
- Eighty-one abstracts have been submitted to the EMSD-sponsored symposium, Energy Materials for Sustainable Development. This number has grown significantly compared to those in previous MS&T meetings.
- The sessions of the symposium have been built. The sessions are grouped into four topics: (1) Battery and energy storage, (2) Thermoelectrics, (3) Photovoltaics and photocatalysis, and (4) Energy harvesting, system and application. There is also a poster session.
- In addition, 10 abstracts have been submitted to the other EMSD-sponsored symposium, Ceramic Materials for Nuclear Energy System.
- Our division’s General Business Meeting is scheduled for 5:00-6:00pm on Monday, September 29. The location of the meeting will be published soon. If you are attending MS&T25, we look forward to meeting you there!
- EMSD awards for travel stipends on PACRIM16 & GOMD2025
- We have given $2,150 USD in total to five early-career participants as travel support.
- The awardees were selected by the organizers of two symposia: (1) Advanced Functional Materials for Clean Energy Solutions (PACRIM); (2) Glass and Interactions with Its Environment – Fundamentals and Applications (GOMD).
- All the awardees acknowledged the EMSD’s sponsorship and are made aware of opportunities for further engaging with the division.
- EMSD symposia at the ACerS Spring Meeting 2026, April 12–16, 2026, Bellevue, Washington
- Three symposia are solely sponsored by the EMSD:
- Symposium 32 – Solid Oxide Cells for Sustainable Energy
- Symposium 33 – Advances in Thermoelectrics: Bridging Theory and Applications
- Symposium 34 – Advances and Current Challenges in Solid-State Battery Technologies
- EMSD is also co-sponsoring five symposia with other divisions:
- Symposium 1 – Emerging Frontiers in Glasses and Ceramics
- Symposium 2 – Outreach and Engagement: STE(A)M Outreach, Education, Engagement and Retention
- Symposium 3 – Sustainable Horizons: A Recurring Symposium on Collective Action for a Resilient Future
- Symposium 15 – Ceramic and Composite Materials and Systems for a Sustainable and Resilient Energy Future
- Symposium 19 – Glass and Interactions with its Environment – Fundamentals and Applicaitons

- Mid-term General Business Meeting
- On May 9, 2025, we held an online General Business Meeting for all the division members.

- During the meeting, we introduced opportunities for engaging with the division and roles of the division’s executive committee members.
- We look forward to hearing from you regarding getting involved in our division activities!
- Call for nominations for D. T. Ranking award
- EMSD confers the D. T. Rankin award to members who have provided outstanding service to the division.
- The awardee will give a plenary talk dedicated to the award at one of the division’s symposia. The call for nominations is open. Please contact the division leaders for details.
