The May 2026 issue of ACerS Bulletin is now available online.

In this month’s issue, we discuss approaches to green glass manufacturing. The cover story by Lisa McDonald outlines broad approaches to green glass manufacturing, from raw material sourcing and furnace optimization to data-driven processing and recycling. Another feature story by S. K. Sundaram explores what is known about trinitite glasses, which formed during the Trinity nuclear weapon test. The resource roundup article by Randy B. Hecht overviews what steps different countries are taking to develop and implement global glass sustainability standards.

In addition to the feature stories, the “Journal Highlights” column by ACerS journals managing editor Brittney Hauke highlights glass innovations that are both environmentally friendly (LionGlass) and support environmentally friendly processes (fertilizer). The “Deciphering the Discipline” column by student Ebele Ahizi shows how using wollastonite instead of calcium carbonate as the raw material for soda–lime–silica glass production can lower carbon emissions and reduce energy requirements.

This issue’s Industry section features three columns that dive deeper into various glass markets. The “Business and Market View” column highlights two reports that demonstrate solutions to green glass manufacturing in both the processing (industrial furnaces) and application (building materials) realms. The “Industry Perspectives” column by Caio Bragatto looks at the evolution of borate glasses and the contributions of late Coe College Professor Steve Feller to borate science. The “Industry Insights” column by David Holthaus explores how organizations are overcoming challenges in the glass recycling ecosystem.

Finally, learn about the new ACerS Innovation Fund, which will subsidize potential revenue-generating products and services that will benefit the ceramics, glass, and materials community.
