WESTERVILLE, Ohio (March 12, 2025)—The American Ceramic Society (ACerS) is proud to announce its participation in the first-ever International Day of Ceramics, a global initiative established by the Japan Fine Ceramics Association, the International Ceramic Federation, and other academic and industry organizations to celebrate and promote the vital role ceramics play in our modern world.
The initiative will launch with special announcements on March 12, 2025, with the first official celebration to be held in 2026. The International Day of Ceramics will be observed annually on or around March 12.
“Ceramics are foundational to countless aspects of modern life, yet their contributions often remain invisible to the public,” says Monica Ferraris, ACerS president. “This international day gives us an opportunity to highlight how ceramic materials and technologies shape our world—from smartphones and computers to medical implants and aerospace applications.”
From traditional clay pottery that has served humanity for millennia to advanced bioceramics used in artificial tissue scaffolding, ceramics represent one of the three major material groups alongside metals and polymers. Despite their ubiquity, ceramics often receive less recognition than other materials as they are typically embedded within larger systems and devices.
“The ceramics industry offers incredible opportunities for innovation in everything from healthcare to renewable energy,” says Mark Mecklenborg, executive director of ACerS. “Through this International Day of Ceramics, we hope to show the public that ceramics represent not just our historical past but the building blocks of our technological future.”
The American Ceramic Society invites all members, industry partners, academic institutions, and the public to participate in planning and celebrating this important initiative.
