The May 2021 issue of ACerS Bulletin is now available online.
In this month’s issue, we look at methods used to join dissimilar materials. In the cover story, author Richard M. Carter reports on his group’s work on ultrashort pulse laser welding to join metals and glass. An extended abstract by authors Courtney Calahoo, Louis Langley, Thomas D. Bennet, and Lothar Wondraczek details how they joined metal–organic frameworks and inorganic glasses to create a hybrid composite.
The “Deciphering the Discipline” column and “Business and Market View” column expand on the theme by looking at additional joining methods and the welding equipment and supplies market, respectively. An article by professor Yiquan Wu and students Iva Milisavljevic, Jenna Metera, and Kana Tomita explore joining in a difference sense by summarizing a virtual student exchange program that joined students around the world during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This issue also contains a feature story by author William J. Walker, Jr. describing the use of failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) to design a spark plus insulator. FMEA is a systematic approach to reduce technical risks of a product or process by identifying all potential failure modes and their causes.
Finally, check out the “Into the Bulletin Archives” column, which is part of this year’s ongoing celebrations for ACerS Bulletin Volume 100. The May column takes a look at the Bulletin’s history in the 1950s, including a look at the first Society-owned headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.
