The June/July 2024 issue of ACerS Bulletin is now available online.
In this month’s issue, we look at novel materials and architectures for digital technologies. The feature stories focus on recent advancements in the field of quantum systems. The first feature article by Nazar Delegan describes research at Argonne and Sandia National Laboratories to unlock the potential of silicon carbide as a platform for quantum systems. The second feature article by Madhav Gupta and Zhiqin Chu reports a novel method of performing widefield quantum sensing using neuromorphic vision sensors.
In addition to the feature stories, the “News and Trends” section overviews some new centers and facilities that are conducting research on next-generation quantum systems. Meanwhile, the “Business and Market View” column overviews the global market for electronic chemicals and materials.
The June/July issue traditionally contains the annual ACerS Bulletin student section, and a “Letter to Students” by ACerS Fellow David W. Richerson offers a warm welcome to younger readers.
But new this year, the President’s Council of Student Advisors rebranded and expanded the section as the “Emerging Professionals” section to better showcase young ACerS members along every step of their journey, from undergraduates to recent graduates. The updated section consists of two parts:
- Research articles: Three full-page articles describe research based on this issue’s theme, “Ceramics for digital technologies.” These articles are contributed by Material Advantage, Global Graduate Research Network, and Young Professionals Network members.
- “Science for Society” articles: This two-page spread features three stories on the IGNITE MSE poster topics of outreach and community engagement; technology for social good; and inclusivity, diversity, and ethics in research.
This year also features two bonus articles contributed by ACerS members and staff, which describe the need for inclusivity in Q&A sessions at scientific conferences and the success of new diversity scholarships funded by ACerS, respectively.
In addition to the “Emerging Professionals” section, the annual Kreidl award abstract by post-doc Brian Topper describes the development of a modified modeling tool to reveal the short-range order of the binary zinc borate glass system. Meanwhile, the “Journal Highlights” column recognizes the work of other young authors who have published in ACerS journals.
Also included in this issue is the latest Ceramic & Glass Manufacturing, which explores strategies that companies can use to ignite growth in their businesses. The cover story contains interviews with Jason Salley (McDanel Advanced Material Technologies, vice president of sales) and Tom Arbanas (Du-Co Ceramics, president) about their experience with expanding into new markets, acquiring other companies, and investing in employee training, among other growth strategies. Expanding on that last point, an accompanying article overviews the workforce development programs in each U.S. state to ensure domestic workers remain competitive.
Finally, meet the incoming ACerS officers and Board members for 2024–2025.
