Castellón, 20/02/2020: Over 50 professionals attended the kick-off session of the Spain Chapter of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS), held at Universitat Jaume I (UJI) of Castellón on Institute for Ceramic Technology (ITC) premises.
The session was inaugurated by Jesús Lancis, Vice-Rector for Research and Knowledge Transfer at Universitat Jaume I (UJI); Gustavo Mallol, Director of the Ceramic Industry Research Association (AICE); Enrique Sánchez, Director of the University Institute for Ceramic Technology “Agustín Escardino” (IUTC-UJI); and Arnaldo Moreno, President of the ACerS Spain Chapter and member of the Institute for Ceramic Technology (ITC).
Pilar Gómez and Arnaldo Moreno then delivered an introduction to additive manufacturing, followed by the presentation: “Digitalization, technologies and examples”, by Fátima Vélez de Guevara and Cristina Fabuel, experts at ITC in this field. The paper: “Additive manufacturing of ceramic/glass composites of low melting temperature (500 °C)” then followed. This presentation had been prepared by experts from three major research centers, namely the Institute for Materials Science in Madrid (ICMM-CSIC), the Nano-Materials and Nanotechnology Research Center (CINN-CSIC) in Asturias, and the Institute for Ceramics in Galicia (ICG-USC).
The next talk: “Thermal extrusion of ceramic components from colloidal suspensions” was presented by members of the Institute for Ceramics and Glass (ICV-CSIC) in Madrid. Members of the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) in Sant Adrià de Besòs (Barcelona) then delivered the paper: “Ceramics 3D printing for energy applications”. The Technology Center IDONIAL (from Gijón, in Asturias) subsequently analyzed: “Lithography-based 3D printing for technical ceramics and bioceramics: operating details and success stories”. Experts from the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa, Switzerland) and the Institute for Ceramics and Glass (ICV-CSIC) in Madrid then addressed: “Additive manufacturing of dental ceramics by stereolithography”.
Then followed the firm BE MORE 3D from Valencia, whose presentation dealt with the “Application of additive manufacturing to architecture. 3D printing of housing”. Finally, the paper “Stone 3D printing for construction, design & research” by the firm CONCR3DE from Rotterdam, the Netherlands, wrapped up the session.
It was generally a very satisfactory start to the activities of the Spain Chapter of ACerS, as these innovative technologies are being increasingly studied and used in a wide range of fields. The action drew the attention of professionals from the ceramic and other sectors, in view of prospective applications that may be expected, shortly, to be ever more widely implemented in many different fields.
