Day 3 of this year’s Materials Science and Technology conference definitely didn’t disappoint.

The schedule began with the event’s plenary session, which featured Sylvia Johnson, chief materials technologist in the Entry Systems and Technology Division at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., as one of the presenters. Johnson was this year’s Edward Orton, Jr. Memorial Lecturer—an honor that recognizes individuals for scholarly work in ceramics or a related field. Her presentation on materials science in outer space drew a packed house and was a hit with session attendees.

The afternoon brought crowds to the Exhibit Hall for the infamous annual Mug Drop and Disc Golf competitions. And of course the ACerS lounge continued to be the place to be for mingling with members and Society staff. Check out some of the day’s highlights!
