The European Ceramic Society–American Ceramic Society Joint Award recognizes individuals who foster international cooperation between the American Ceramic Society and the European Ceramic Society, in demonstration of both organizations’ commitment to work together to better serve the international ceramics community.

Nomination Process

A nomination form must be submitted and should include a statement of no more than 500 words stating the nominee’s leadership and service to further cooperation between ECerS and ACerS either over a period of several years, or highlighting service over and above expectations in a single event/activity, such as organizing a meeting, chairing a committee or task force, recruiting new members, frequently writing and/or reviewing for ECerS and ACerS publications, or promotion of both Societies’ positive interactions in the ceramics and glass community to the rest of the world.

The award shall be presented in alternate years at the ACerS Annual Meeting event (held in conjunction with Materials Science & Technology Conference in North America) in even years and the European Ceramic Society Biennial Meeting in odd years. The award shall consist of an honorarium of $1500, registration for the event for one person, a certificate(s) and a piece of ceramic or glass artwork from the host society.

Award Winners

Pavol Šajgalík

Pavol Šajgalík is the President of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava, Slovak Republic (since 2000), and simultaneously senior research scientist at the Ceramic Department, Institute of Inorganic Chemistry SAS (since 1979). He served, for more than ten years, since 2015, as the president of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

He received his MSc at the Department of Experimental Physics, Comenius University, Bratislava in1979; his PhD at the Institute of Physics SAS in 1987; DSc at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry SAS in 1996; Assoc. Prof. at Technical University of Košice in 1998 and Full Professor at Trenčín University of Alexander Dubček in 2004.

Primarily his research is focused on the research and development of oxide and non-oxide high performance ceramics. Main interest of his research is the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties of these materials. He is the author of more than 200 scientific papers, co-editor of 8 proceedings, guest editor of 7 special issues of the professional journals, co-author of 10 monographs.

He regularly organizes workshops on Engineering Ceramics. He has been a leader of many international projects. He is the member of the European, American and Japan Ceramic Societies, the president of the Slovak Silicate Society, the member elect of the World Academy of Ceramics and the American Ceramic Society. In 2015 he was awarded the Slovak State decoration: Order of the Ľudovít Štúr of III. Class.

In 2013 he was awarded the Stuijts Award of ECerS and Bridge Building Award of ACerS. He is a Fellow of ECerS and ACerS. In 2015-2018 he was the president of ECerS.
