John Jeppson, in whose honor this award is made, was instrumental in establishing the Norton Company. His ceramic experience in forming and firing were major factors in producing some of the first ceramic grinding wheels. Mr. Jeppson’s work formed the basis for the subsequent growth of an important segment of the ceramic industry.
The Jeppson Award recognizes distinguished scientific, technical, or engineering achievements in ceramics.
Nomination Process
Nominations should consist of a single page cover letter from the first sponsor setting forth the qualifications of the nominee and giving a full and complete statement of the reasons for proposing the candidate. Single page endorsement letters from additional members may accompany the nomination, but are not necessary. No more than three additional single sided sheets containing a record of the candidate’s professional and industrial achievements may be included. Nominations must conform to this format. Nominations are active for five years then are dropped from the list. A nominee may, however, be re-nominated.

Jingyang Wang
Jingyang Wang is a Distinguished Professor of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Head of the Advanced Ceramics and Composites Division at the Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science and the Institute of Metal Research, CAS, China. He is also the Vice Director of Liaoning Academy of Materials. His research interests focused on fundamental exploration and technological developments of ceramics and high temperature coatings. He promoted the advancements of science and technology in design, processing, evaluation and application of advanced ceramics, ceramic-matrix-composites, and high temperature thermal barrier and environmental barrier coating for extreme environmental applications. He is globally recognized in the field of high-throughput materials design, and development of novel processing methods for bulk, low-dimensional and porous materials for a variety of ceramics, composites, and multi-functional coatings. He registered the first EBC-Database-Software of more than 140 EBC candidates. This database is successfully used to guide the selection and design of high temperature coatings for different SiCf/SiC CMC engine components.
He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed SCI papers (WoS H-index factor 62) and received 50 patents, to date. He has presented more than 60 plenary, keynote and invited talks and has served as principal symposium organizer and advisory board member for around 50 important international conferences. He has been elected as Academician of World Academy of Ceramics (WAC) in 2017 and recipient of 2016 Acta Materialia Silver Medal, Fellow of ASM International in 2020, ACerS Fellow 2019, ACerS Global Ambassador Award 2017, JACerS Loyalty Recognition Award 2014, ECD Global Star Award 2012, ASM-IIM Visiting Lectureship Award 2015, Shri Sardar Pratap Singh Memorial Award from India in 2016, and National Leading Talent Award for Science and Technology Innovation, CAS Distinguished Professor Award, and National Science and Technology Progress Award.
Prof. Wang served on the ACerS Board of Directors (2018-2021), Chair of ECD (2017-18) and ICACC 2017 conference, John Jeppson Award (2016-18 member and chair) and Geijsbeek PACRIM International Award (2017-21) committees.
