Construction work begins on Croatia’s first agrisolar power plant

Solar power developer Solida is pioneering the application of the agrivoltaic concept in Croatia. It launched the construction of a facility with 15 MW peak capacity at a location where it would also farm sheep. The company intends to build only agrisolar plants.

Technology provider Bucher Emhart Glass broke ground on a RM108 million (US$24 million) manufacturing facility in Malaysia. This event signifies the start of the construction phase for the new manufacturing facility, which is scheduled to be completed in 2024.

LKAB raises deposit estimate at Europe’s biggest rare earth find

Swedish mining company LKAB raised by a quarter its estimate of the size of rare earth oxide deposits at the Per Geijer deposit in the Kiruna area of northern Sweden. Resources are now estimated at 1.3 million tonnes, up from an earlier estimate of more than 1 million.

Pennsylvania using tons of recycled glass nuggets to rebuild collapsed Interstate 95

Pennsylvania will truck in 2,000 tons of lightweight glass nuggets to help quickly rebuild a collapsed section of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia, and crews will work 24 hours a day until they can reopen the critical commercial artery.

Blue Whale Materials, a lithium-ion battery recycling company, acquired Eclipse Energy, a battery testing and evaluation lab. To facilitate this expansion, Blue Whale Materials formed a new subsidiary, BW Energy and Innovation, dedicated to battery testing and evaluation.

South Korean prosecutors arrested and indicted a former executive of Samsung Electronics suspected of stealing trade secrets while attempting to establish a copycat computer chip plant in China. The technology allegedly stolen by the man’s China-based company would have been worth at least 300 billion won (US$233 million) for Samsung.

The share of renewable energy in global power generation hit 30% last year after record growth in solar, but little progress has been made when it comes to decarbonizing the heat and fuel sectors, according to a report published by the Paris-based REN21 think tank.

NASA and Boeing announced that the Air Force had designated a new transonic, truss-winged aircraft as the X-66A. The design is a product of the Sustainable Flight Demonstrator project, a NASA–Boeing partnership to produce a single-aisle plane that promises to slash fuel consumption for commercial aircraft.

Cheesecake Energy’s eTanker stores thermal energy with compressed air and sand

Cheesecake Energy is building shipping-container systems that store thermal energy using tanks of compressed air and silos of hot sand. Next year, the town of Colchester, England, will transplant four of these containers onto the site of a new mixed-use development.

First Solar announces limited production run of world’s first bifacial thin film PV module

First Solar, Inc. announced a limited production run of the world’s first bifacial solar panel using an advanced thin film semiconductor. The module, which is undergoing field and laboratory testing, builds on the track record of First Solar’s successful Series 6 monofacial module platform.
