Australia’s first rare earths processing plant opens in Kalgoorlie
The Lynas Rare Earths processing plant opened in Kalgoorlie, Australia. The new plant will process ores from the nearby Mt Weld mine to create a mixed rare earth carbonate. It will be the first rare earths processing facility in Australia and the largest outside of China.
Mercedes-Benz opens its own battery recycling factory
Mercedes-Benz opened its own battery recycling plant in Germany that will process and recycle enough raw materials to produce more than 50,000 new battery modules per year. The recycling facility is being funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action as part of a scientific research project between three German universities.
Carbon capture concrete hits London sites
Swiss carbon removal specialist neustark is working with Aggregate Industries on its first U.K. site in Greenwich. Neustark’s technology captures carbon dioxide from biomass sites, liquefies it, then injects it into existing mineral waste streams, such as demolished materials, to be recycled and used in construction.
Canadian manufacturer to make glass for solar panels in United States
Canadian Premium Sand, a glass manufacturer setting up in Canada to produce glass for solar panels, announced that it intends to also start a pattern solar glass factory in the United States. U.S. panel manufacturers Heliene and Qcells have signed glass purchasing agreements with Canadian Premium Sand for their U.S.-made panels.
Hydrogen technology demonstration facility helps new technology get to market
Hadean Energy is trailing their solid oxide electrolyzer technology at the Hydrogen Technology Demonstration Facility run by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization as they progress toward commercial readiness.
Lucideon achieves 100% hydrogen firing for ceramics production
Lucideon has reportedly completed 100% hydrogen firing for ceramics production at the AMRICC Center in Staffordshire, the U.K. The materials technology, processing, and testing firm worked with Creavit Türkiye on the project, which saw them fire sanitaryware solely by hydrogen for over 13 hours at 1,200°C.

Ardagh joins US glass recycling program
Ardagh Glass Packaging-North America partnered with Don’t Trash Glass to increase glass recycling rates in Chicago. Don’t Trash Glass is a program in collaboration with the Glass Packaging Institute and Glass King Recovery & Recycling.
K2-CO2 partners with O-I Glass Italy for carbon capture project
O-I Glass Italy partnered with K2-CO2 on the Glass2Life project, which is a full-scale exploration of carbon capture and storage in glass manufacturing. The project is in collaboration with Stazione Sperimentale del Vetro, an international research center and will begin in January 2025.
Rega Energy partners with Leerdam Crisal Glass to advance green manufacturing in Portugal
Rega Energy and Leerdam Crisal Glass signed a long-term renewable gas purchase agreement in which Rega Energy will supply Leerdam Crisal Glass’ Marinha Grande facility in Portugal with green hydrogen and green oxygen.

The “Overall Excellence” award was presented to TSX Broadway – Palace Theater, located in New York City. Corning is facing antitrust scrutiny after the European Commission said it is investigating the speciality glass maker’s exclusive deals for its Gorilla Glass used in cellphones. Under these deals, manufacturers got rebates for buying only Corning glass, and could only take competing offers from rival glass makers if Corning could not match the price.

Bosch Advanced Ceramics uses Lithoz ceramic AM for medical insulating sleeve production
Using Lithoz’s lithography-based ceramic additive manufacturing method, Bosch Advanced Ceramics fabricated a ceramic insulating sleeve for a laparoscopic tool used in minimally invasive surgery. The company says they can manufacture 1,400 parts in a single batch, demonstrating both the precision and scalability of the process.
New wine glass modeled on a jet engine
Melbourne-based glassware producer Denver & Liely added a new wine glass to its collection modeled on commercial jet engines. Batch one of the glasses has a run of 5,000 units and is available online for worldwide shipping.
