Kazakhstan announces discovery of 20-million-metric-ton rare earth metals deposit

Kazakhstan announced the discovery of a rare earth metal deposit with estimated resources of more than 20 million metric tons. Kazakhstan does not currently feature in the U.S. Geological Survey’s list of countries by rare earth metal deposits. If confirmed, the deposit would place Kazakhstan behind only China and Brazil by size of reserves.

AGI Greenpac to invest $82M in new glass plant in Madhya Pradesh

Japanese materials manufacturer Kuraray plans to acquire Nelumbo Inc., a California-based company that has developed a unique materials technology for surface modification. Nelumbo was founded in 2016 as a technology start-up out of University of California, Berkeley.

Chiz Bros makes Advanced Material Science acquisition

Chiz Bros, a provider of custom solutions for glass refractory and high-temperature applications, acquired its long-term vendor, Advanced Material Science. Advanced Material Science is a thermal and electrical insulation material distributor located in southwestern Pennsylvania, with an additional focus on custom computer numerical control machining.

MIT and GE Vernova collaboration aims to develop and scale sustainable energy systems

Massachusetts Institute of Technology and GE Vernova announced the creation of the MIT-GE Vernova Energy and Climate Alliance to help develop and scale sustainable energy systems. The endeavor will encompass research, education, and career opportunities for students, faculty, and staff across MIT’s five schools and the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing.

China responds to Trump tariffs with its own 34% levy on all US goods

Beginning April 10, China says it will impose a 34% tariff on all U.S. goods, and effective immediately, the country will restrict exports of rare earth minerals. China’s new tariffs and export restrictions are in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s so-called “Liberation Day” tariffs, which will place a combined total of 54% tariffs on Chinese imports starting April 9.
