At the same time the 80th Conference on Glass Problems took place in Columbus, Ohio, another conference took place halfway around the world: the 13th Pacific Rim Conference on Ceramic and Glass Technology (PACRIM) in Okinawa, Japan.

The 13th PACRIM conference, held Oct. 27–Nov. 1, 2019, welcomed nearly 1,700 attendees and about 1,540 papers. Topics covered in the symposia were diverse, from energy storage and conversion to biomaterials and nanomaterials, including a symposium dedicated specifically to young professionals.

The main award presented at the conference was the Samuel Geijsbeek PACRIM International Award, given on Monday, Oct. 28 during the plenary talks. The award recognizes individuals who are members of the PACRIM societies for their contributions in the field of ceramics and glass technology that have resulted in significant industrial and/or academic impact, international advocacy, and visibility of the field.

This year’s winners were Mrityunjay Singh, chief scientist at Ohio Aerospace Institute in Cleveland, and Zhengyi Fu, director of the State Kay Lab of Advanced Technology for Materials Synthesis and Processing at Wuhan University of Technology (China). Fu was unable to attend the event, and so Dr. Zhang received the award on Fu’s behalf.
