Competition launched for reprocessing mine tailings for the glass industry

Ennomotive, an open innovation platform for engineering challenges, launched a competition to find new ways to eliminate impurities from mine tailings and use them to produce glass. The competition is open worldwide to any professional, student, or academic from different industries and technical backgrounds. Ennomotive offers €15,000 in prizes.

Kyocera, Ube Industries form venture to manufacture ceramic filters for 5G base stations

Kyocera Corp. and Ube Industries, Ltd. signed a joint venture agreement to manufacture ceramic filters for 5G base stations. Under the agreement, Kyocera will acquire 51% of the shares of Ube Electronics, Ltd., a subsidiary of Ube Industries. Kyocera and Ube Industries will then establish a joint venture, which will commence operations in December 2019.

Schott breaks ground on pharma glass tubing plant in China

Germany-based Schott held a ground-breaking ceremony for its greenfield pharmaceutical glass tubing plant in Jinyun, Zhejiang. The new plant will supply the Chinese domestic pharmaceutical packaging market to aid its development.

RMC Group of Companies to acquire Noble Concrete

The RMC Group of Companies is set to acquire Noble Concrete in a bid to expand its presence in the rural ready-mix market in Alberta, Canada. RMC will acquire Noble’s assets and will retain all staff and customer contracts. The expanded business will serve southern Alberta through the three new plant locations: Picture Butte, Vulcan, and Claresholm.

Vossloh opens new concrete rail tie plant in British Columbia

Vossloh Tie Technologies, a division of Vossloh North America, opened a major rail products manufacturing facility in Monte Lake, B.C., to produce prestressed concrete rail ties for Canadian rail markets.

Gasbarre supplies a box furnace system to a US-based aerospace company

Gasbarre Thermal Processing Systems recently manufactured and commissioned a High Temperature Box Furnace Line for an aerospace company in the Midwestern United States. The equipment will process 36” wide by 48” long by 24” high workloads, weighing up to 2,000 lbs, and will be used for solution treating of high alloy forgings. 

MATECH receives patent for breakthrough high temperature ceramic composites

MATECH received a U.S. Patent for its new process for fabricating ceramic matrix composites. The process uses field assisted sintering technology to produce extremely low porosity and high modulus silicon carbide CMCs (such as turbine blades and vanes) that are able to withstand extreme temperatures up to 2,700°F.

DNV GL awards first Additive Manufacturing Approval of Manufacturer certificate

DNV GL created a new certificate that certifies additively manufactured parts reach same standards as conventionally produced parts. The certificate issued to thyssenkrupp TechCenter Additive Manufacturing makes that company the world’s first producer of 3D-printed parts for maritime applications to obtain manufacturer approval from DNV GL.

Plibrico to demonstrate refractory expertise at Aluminum USA conference in Nashville

The Plibrico Company announced it will participate in the Aluminum USA 2019 exhibition and conference at the Music City Center in Nashville on Sept. 12–13, 2019. China Minmetals unit buys Fanya metal exchange antimony, rare earth stocks

The rare earths arm of state-owned China Minmetals Corp bought three lots of antimony, terbium oxide, and dysprosium oxide formerly held by the defunct Fanya Metal Exchange as the sole bidder in online auctions, paying 780.4 million yuan (US$110 million).

EVG and Schott partner on 300 mm NIL wafers for AR/MR components

Lynas posts record production in preparation for rare earths demand

Lynas Corporation achieved record rare earth oxide production of 19,154 tonnes and neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr) production of 5,898 in the 2019 financial year. Managing director Amanda Lacaze attributed the growth to increased interest in the company as an alternative supply source from China.

DTI open to amending float glass DAO

The Philippine Department of Trade and Industry is open to amending a department administrative order that imposes mandatory standards on all flat glass, but definitely not on the certification and inspection aspect as the agency stressed the need to strictly enforce quality and safety given proliferation of substandard construction glass, mostly from China.
