Rivian demonstrates battery second-life capabilities in Honnold Foundation partnership
Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian announced a project to use its second-life batteries as energy storage units in a microgrid initiative in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, which was severely impacted by Hurricane Maria in 2017. Rivian will use 135kWh of battery packs from its development vehicles to support the project (expected to launch in 2020).
Gerresheimer to push digitization at glass innovation center
Gerresheimer announced the opening of a glass innovation and technology center to develop primary packaging glass products for the industry. The center, which is based in New Jersey, will develop pharmaceutical glass, primary packaging glass products, technologies, and digitized processes.
Funding for sustainable concrete cemented for five more years
The MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub (CSHub), an interdisciplinary team of researchers dedicated to concrete and infrastructure science, engineering, and economics, renewed its relationship with its industry partners for another five years. Founded in 2009, CSHub will receive $10 million of additional funding from its partners.

$1.6m invested in Victorian projects to develop products sourced from recycled glass, plastic
Nine new Victorian projects will receive a combined total of $1.6 million in funding to invest in development and research trials that make use of recycled glass, plastic, paper, and e-waste. There are also projects that will test extraction technologies to improve recovery of precious materials from e-waste, such as solar panels and batteries.
USA, Ireland and Northern Ireland to shine new light on solar technologies
A new research project spanning five universities in three countries and led by Arizona State University will work to improve solar cell technology and look into new uses for photovoltaic devices.
Beta Glass’s $30 million Nigerian capacity expansion on track
Beta Glass’s furnace capacity upgrade at its Agbara, Ogun, Nigeria plant is on schedule to be completed in June 2020. The $30 million investment will include a new furnace from German engineering group Horn and an extra line from Italy’s Bottero group.
Guardian Glass to close Milbury, Ohio plant
Guardian Glass filed a WARN notice to the state of Ohio stating that it intends to close its Millbury fabrication plant on State Rt. 795 and will start eliminating the jobs of its 100 employees on or about November 20. The filing provided no explanation for the closing but called it a business decision.

United States to host 2020 SolarPACES conference
The Department of Energy announced the U.S. will host the world’s biggest conference on concentrating solar power (CSP) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in October 2020. SolarPACES (Solar Power and Chemical Energy Systems) will bring together researchers from around the world to talk about the latest research developments in CSP.
