Argonne partners with industry on nuclear reactor work
Argonne National Laboratory will work with three of the world’s leading nuclear products and services companies—AREVA Federal Services (Aiken, S.C.), GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (Wilmington, N.C.), and Westinghouse Electric Company (Monroeville, Pa.)—on projects that could unlock the potential of advanced nuclear reactor designs, helping create a new generation of safer, more efficient reactors.
Solar-Tectic LLC to develop new sapphire glass material in 2015
Solar-Tectic LLC announced that in 2015 it plans to develop a new process for making sapphire glass using a technique which is patent pending and which was reported on in Materials Letters (“Crystalline Al2O3 on buffered soda-lime glass by e-beam”). The technique involves deposition of a crystalline Al2O3 thin-film on an inexpensive buffered glass substrate such as ordinary soda-lime glass, using a variety of common and simple deposition techniques.
Holcim and Lafarge select the executive committee for LafargeHolcim
Holcim and Lafarge have announced the executive committee for the proposed merged company, LafargeHolcim, due to be formed in the first half of 2015. As previously announced, Lafarge’s current CEO Bruno Lafont will become LafargeHolcim’s first CEO and the chairman of the new board will be Wolfgang Reitzle, currently chairman of Holcim. Lafont will lead a project team of 10 managers from both Holcim and Lafarge to handle the transition.

Corning Inc. announced that Clover, a company that makes integrated point-of-sale tablets, will begin using Antimicrobial Corning Gorilla Glass as the cover glass in its mobile devices. Clover will be the first company to use Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass in payment terminals.
American Concrete Institute to launch new tools for concrete professionals
The American Concrete Institute, an organization whose mission is to develop and disseminate consensus-based knowledge on concrete and its uses, will be conducting a Press Conference at World of Concrete on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, to announce the launch of ACI University, and a new Masonry Testing Technician Certification Program.
