I just got back from Florida and the residents of both coasts are very, very nervous. They also are getting angry because they think much of the U.S. outside the Gulf of Mexico area isn’t all that concerned.
For anyone who doesn’t think it isn’t a big deal already, I suggest you check out Paul Rademacher’s “How big is the Deepwater Horizon oil spill?” app for Google Earth. It allows a user to superimpose the oil slick (as of May 6 May 8) over any geographic area one chooses.
The above screenshot is what the oil spill would look like if it was dropped in the middle of Ohio. Although I didn’t set up the screen shot this way, it is pretty clear that it would extend from Columbus nearly to Pittsburgh!
