• According to reports, Kapiri Glass Manufacturing Ltd., based in Zambia, has announced that it will soon start the procurement process for equipment and machinery to revive the defunct plant in Central Province.

Gerresheimer AG has announced the acquisition of a majority shareholding in the Indian company Neutral Glass and Allied Industries. Gerresheimer already has five plants in South America, seven in China and representative offices in Moscow and Mumbai.

Srpska Fabrika Stakla, owned by Serbian state-owned gas monopoly Srbijagas, has been acquired 63.6% by Bulgarian glassmaker Rubin.

Alcoa Inc., the US. aluminum giant, plans to cut alumina production in the Atlantic region by 4 percent, becoming the first producer to take measures aimed at reducing oversupply that has lowered prices to around $300 per ton.

• For the second time in a decade, Rockhampton’s QMAG Ltd. has changed hands, with the new owner guaranteeing the “just over 400” current jobs. Multinational company Sibelco in fact announced it had acquired QMAG, one of the world’s largest producers of deadburned, electrofused and calcined magnesia for the global refractory and chemical markets.
