Here in the U.S. it’s Thanksgiving week—a holiday that begins with the gathering of family and friends for a huge meal on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday), followed by the biggest shopping day of the year (Black Friday), sprinkled with NFL football, and bookended by two of the biggest travel days of the holiday week, Wednesday and Sunday.
If you’re having a difficult time coming up with a unique gift for your favorite materials scientist or ceramic or glass engineer this Christmas holiday season, ACerS and Wiley have you covered—and you won’t even have to brave the traffic and crowds on Black Friday.
ACerS and Wiley have published three new books that address materials, technology, and manufacturing processes. These books are the newest titles to be included in the ACerS/Wiley online bookstore.
Check out the latest titles below and visit the ACerS bookstore to get a head start on your Black Friday shopping. Remember, ACerS members get 35 percent off all ACerS/Wiley titles, simply by entering CERAM in the promo code field during online checkout.
Materials Science and Technology of Optical Fabrication
This book takes a materials science look at the optical fabrication process and its complex interactions. Author and ACerS member Tayyab I. Suratwala divides the book into two parts, the first of which covers phenomena of grinding and polishing processes along with resulting optical properties. Part two addresses forensic tools needed to increase yield of optics, explores characterization and fabrication techniques, and examines interactions of optical fabrication processes and methods used to fabricate high damage-resistant optics.
Materials and Processes for CO2 Capture, Conversion, and Sequestration
Carbon capture is the process that extracts carbon dioxide from industrial emissions and stores it safely underground. This new book outlines the challenges in the design and processing of carbon capture and storage (CCS), and details various carbon capture methods, such as membrane-based, electrochemical, and solvent-based. The book also offers the latest cutting-edge research on CCS methods and materials, and addresses technology, materials, and products that could ultimately impact the environment. Editors include ACerS members Lan Li, Kevin Huang, and Lawrence P. Cook.
Fundamentals of Electroceramics: Materials, Devices, and Applications
This textbook is unique in that it offers a comprehensive study of electroceramics and their applications. What are some of the phenomena exclusive to electroceramics? What properties do they exhibit? How can electroceramics be used in applications for energy harvesting, storage, and green energy initiatives? Author and ACerS member R.K. Pandey details numerous applications spanning 11 chapters, covering topics such as electroceramic semiconductor devices, binding forces in solids and essential elements of crystallography, and other relevant subject matter. (This book won’t be available until after the first of the year, but Wiley is now taking pre-orders.)
The Glass of Wine: The Science, Technology, and Art of Glassware for Transporting and Enjoying Wine
We cannot end this article without including a book about one of our favorite topics. What better gift than this book for a glass scientist or student who also happens to be a wine enthusiast? We reviewed this book last year and it continues to be popular with the scientific community. Authors James and Penelope Shackelford conducted extensive research into the history and science of glass and winemaking to bring readers interesting facts about wine and how glass has become an important material to the wine industry. Even with some technical concepts related to glass science, non-scientists will still find it an enjoyable read.
Avoid the Black Friday madness and give the gift of learning. Visit the ACerS/Wiley bookstore online to shop for these or any of the other ACerS/Wiley titles. And ACerS members, don’t forget your 35 percent discount, one of the many benefits of membership.
Happy shopping!
