DESCRIPTION

Bridging the Gap in Materials Science: Empowering ECRs and Inspiring STEAM Careers through Podcasting and Scientific Outreach for Kids and Adolescents

This webinar explores innovative approaches to mentorship and outreach in materials science. Many early career researchers (ECRs)-tailored podcasts are revolutionizing academic mentorship by providing accessible and flexible guidance for MSc students, PhD students, and even post-docs. The speaker will present how her podcast, Mi Asesor Está Ocupado, was born to overcome a fundamental mentorship necessity of many ECRs from Spanish-speaking countries and how this format can empower ECRs to make meaningful contributions to science. Additionally, this webinar highlights the transformative power of early outreach to inspire STEAM careers in children and adolescents. Through practical examples derived from the outreach project, “Pelucco, a microplastic’s journey,” the speaker will share her experience creating engaging activities that demystify science for young learners.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Erika Iveth Cedillo-González, Research Associate, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE, Italy)

Dr. Erika Iveth Cedillo-González (she/her) is a Research Associate in the Department of Engineering “Enzo Ferrari” of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE, Italy). She received her BSc and MSc from the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL, Mexico) and her PhD from UNIMORE. Cedillo-González’s research focuses on the multidisciplinary development of sustainable engineered processes and materials for construction and environmental remediation. From 2016-2021, she served as an Associate Professor in the School of Chemistry of the UANL. She was the PI of two research projects granted by the Mexican National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT) and the Mexican Ministry of Public Education (SEP). Those projects aimed to develop photocatalytic processes to remove polyethylene and polystyrene micro and nanoplastics from aqueous environments using green semiconductors. She also performs science communication, focusing on plastic pollution and women in STEM. Additionally, she hosts a podcast for the Spanish-speaking ECRs community, examining topics of interest for early career researchers, such as mentoring, academic writing, and grant proposals, thereby providing crucial support to the ECRs community.
