Yutai Katoh
Yutai Katoh (a.k.a. Kato) is Director of Materials Science and Technology Division and Corporate Fellow of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He received PhD in Materials Science from the University of Tokyo. Before arriving ORNL, he was serving as Assistant Professor for the National Institute for Fusion Science then as Associate Professor for Kyoto University, both in Japan. As Division Director, he currently oversees execution of materials science and engineering research conducted by about 200 professional staff. His programmatic responsibilities at ORNL have included directing research on fusion materials and ceramic composite accident tolerant fuel technologies, in support of DOE Office of Fusion Energy Sciences and Office of Nuclear Energy, respectively.
Dr. Katoh’s research interest spans from physics of fundamental radiation effects in ceramics to processing and applications of advanced ceramic and composites for energy applications. He is best known for his work on development of and radiation effects in silicon carbide composites for nuclear applications. Dr. Katoh has published more than 300 peer-reviewed journal articles mainly in ceramic science with greater than 20,000 citations. He has had more than 16 patents. He is a Fellow of both the American Ceramic Society and the American Nuclear Society.
